From an early age, John was immersed in the fire service, helping at his local fire department by cleaning trucks, rolling hose, and eventually serving as a volunteer firefighter. Those early experiences made the fire service a defining part of his life and inspired him to pursue a professional career.

At just 25 years old, John joined the Newark Fire Department as a full-time firefighter, serving in a busy ladder company on Bergen Street. Nine years later, he earned the rank of Captain, leading firefighters in one of the nation's most demanding urban environments.

In 2007, following major surgery, John was temporarily assigned to the training academy. What began as a recovery assignment quickly became a calling. He discovered a passion for developing firefighters and helping others succeed. Upon returning to active operations with Engine 10 on Clinton Avenue, he continued to mentor and lead younger firefighters, recognizing that effective leadership extended beyond technical proficiency.

Driven by a desire to make a broader impact, John joined the Essex County Fire Academy and later the Morris County Fire Academy in 2016, where he expanded his role as an instructor and mentor. Throughout his career, he observed that while emergency responders receive extensive technical training, there was a growing need to develop the critical soft skills that build resilient teams and effective leaders.

In 2022, John created and piloted a Critical Thinking course at the Morris County Fire Academy, introducing a new approach to problem-solving, communication, and team dynamics within the fire service. The success of the program reinforced his belief that strong organizations are built by developing both the individual and the team.

At the heart of that belief is a deeply personal inspiration — his daughter Kayla. Her strength, grace, and unwavering spirit in the face of adversity shaped the way John sees leadership, resilience, and what it truly means to show up for others. That vision led to the creation of Fire Optics. Built on the principles of critical thinking, mentorship, leadership, and peer support, Fire Optics delivers on-site training designed to strengthen emergency service organizations from the inside out. John's mission is to help departments create a "think tank" culture where firefighters and first responders are empowered to grow, lead, and move forward together.
